Carpal tunnel syndrome

Datum :

Carpal tunnel syndrome, as the name implies, is a syndrome or cluster of symptoms related to pathology in the carpal tunnel. The cardinal signs of CTS are pain, loss of motor control in the distribution of the median nerve. This includes pain, tingling, numbness in the first three fingers but excluding the palm, weakness of the thumb, loss of grip strength and varying degrees of loss of function. Above the wrist or symptoms involving the entire hand. Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) or entrapment of the median nerve at the wrist is the most common upper limb entrapment neuropathy, representing up to 90% of all neuropathies.

Clinical features of CTS.

1. Pain at the wrist (may occur but is uncommon)

2. Numbness of the entire hand.

3. Pain not involving the first three and a half fingers.

4. Loss of sensation of the mouse of the thumb or the entire palm.

Treatment strategiesThere are two general approaches to the treatment of CTS, conservative and surgical. Conservative approaches traditionally include avoidance of aggravating factors, use of a splint during the day or night, oral steroidal medication, and on occasion mobilization techniques for the wrist. "Neurodynamic mobilization," the technique of neural gliding, is based on motion and attempts to include the nerve over the entire available range of motion, allowing the nerve to be affected both mechanically and physiologically.
